Indications
- Treatment of primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Treatment of infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention of infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions
- Substitute for tear fluid in case of unstable tear film
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Adjunct to systemic therapy in the treatment of pyodermas
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for secondarily infected dermatoses
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer (povidone)
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by slow liberation
- Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Effective against protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Surgical Scrub: Apply for preoperative and postoperative washing
- Powder: Apply a light dusting to the affected area
- Ophthalmic Solution: Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy can exhibit a hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Avoid in patients with thyroid disorders
- Avoid in severely burnt patients with possible hepatic and renal impairment
- Not recommended for use in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Application to severe burns or large denuded areas may produce systemic adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential fetal thyroid effects
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding (American Academy of Pediatrics guidance)
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution needed for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, and broken skin applications
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Avoid regular use in patients with known iodine sensitivity
