Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers

- Postoperative application to incisions
- Oral moniliasis (thrush)

- As a preoperative swab in the mouth and throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use undiluted or diluted with warm water
- Wet hands and forearms with water for surgical scrub
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- No experience regarding the safety of eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation, not recommended unless for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult a physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or persistent complications
- Avoid prolonged use and pooling beneath the patient for preoperative prepping
- Caution in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Avoid regular use in patients with renal insufficiency and broken skin
- Special caution when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should refrain from driving or using machinery

- Do not freeze
- Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
