Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency
  • Prophylaxis of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency during pregnancy
  • Prophylaxis of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency during lactation

Composition

  • Each capsule contains elemental iron 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN)
  • Each capsule contains folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Each capsule contains zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Mode of Action

  • Timed-release capsule
  • Combined preparation of carbonyl iron, folic acid, and zinc sulphate monohydrate
  • Carbonyl Iron has high bioavailability and low toxicity

Dosage and Administration

  • Adult dosage: One capsule daily
  • To be taken before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of tetracycline antibiotics
  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of quinolone antibiotics
  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of levodopa
  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of levothyroxine
  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of methyldopa
  • Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of penicillamine
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics
  • Plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone are possibly reduced

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations like nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Possibility of dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Avoid use during first trimester if possible
  • Definite evidence of iron deficiency required for iron administration during first trimester
  • Prophylaxis of iron deficiency justified during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions and Warnings

  • Special care in patients with iron overload states
  • Failure to respond to treatment requires further investigations
  • Risk of zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure
