Description

Composition

  • Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium
  • Vitamin D USP 200 IU
  • Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium
  • Vitamin D USP 400 IU
  • Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium
  • Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP

Pharmacology

  • Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital to various bodily functions
  • Clinical evidence suggests that Calcium is useful for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis
  • Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation
  • Synergistic effects on bone growth and in Osteoporosis and fracture prevention
  • Coral Calcium sourced from coral origin with better absorption

Dosage & Administration

  • One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water
  • Full stomach ensures better absorption
  • Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally
  • Stir the solution before drinking for better absorption

Interaction

  • Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
  • Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
  • Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins or laxatives may reduce the gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
  • Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations

Contraindications

  • Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
  • Hypersensitivity to the component
  • Severe renal insufficiencies
  • Concomitant digoxin therapy

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
  • Reproductive toxicity with high dose of vitamin D in animals
  • Avoid overdoses as it may lead to permanent hypercalcaemia with adverse effects on the foetus
  • No indications of teratogenic effects in humans
  • Consideration needed when giving additional vitamin D to the child

Precautions & Warnings

  • Long-term treatment requires serum calcium level monitoring and renal function monitoring
  • Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
  • Monitor effect on calcium and phosphate levels in patients with impairment of renal function
  • Use with caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
  • Consideration needed for the dose when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D

Overdose Effects

  • Hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
  • Symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Persistently high calcium levels may lead to irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification
