Description
- Histamine analog
- Relieves vertigo symptoms
- Improves circulation in inner ear
- Pressure reduction on membranous labyrinth
Pharmacology
- Acts as histamine H1-receptor agonist
- Vasodilatory effect
- Reduction in endolymphatic pressure
- Increases vestibulocochlear blood flow
- Reduces asymmetrical functioning of sensory vestibular organs
- Elevates levels of neurotransmitters including serotonin
- Inhibits activity of vestibular nuclei
Dosage & Administration
- Initial oral treatment 8-16mg three times daily
- Maintenance doses 24-48mg daily
- Dosage adjustments
- Improvement observed after couple of weeks
- No data for patients with hepatic impairment or renal impairment
- Limited data in the elderly
Interaction
- No proven cases of hazardous interactions
- Case report of interaction with ethanol and pyrimethamine with dapsone
- Potentiation of betahistine with salbutamol
- Mutual attenuation of effect with concurrent administration of H1 antagonists
Contraindications
- Phaeochromocytoma
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not completely established in human pregnancy
- No known teratogenic effect in animals
- Excreted in breast milk
- Toxicity to the neonate not known
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with peptic ulcer or a history of peptic ulceration
- Caution in patients with bronchial asthma
- Caution in patients with urticaria, rashes, or allergic rhinitis
- Caution in patients with severe hypotension
- Patients with rare hereditary problems should not take this medicine
- Rare reports of drowsiness
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
Overdose Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dyspepsia
- Ataxia
- Seizures
- More serious complications in cases of intentional overdose especially in combination with other overdozed drugs
- No specific antidote
- Gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment recommended
