Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm once a day
- Maximum dose for adults: 4 gm/day
- Usual dose for infants and children: 50 to 75 mg/kg once a day
- Maximum dose for infants and children: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Injection preparation for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Should be administered over 2-4 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment
- Solution maintains potency for at least 6 hours at room temperature

- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions such as rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
- Hepatic reactions including elevated enzymes
- CNS reactions such as nervousness, confusion, headache
- Local phlebitis occurs rarely following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Shadows suggesting sludge in the gallbladder observed in rare cases
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote, symptomatic treatment advised
