Description
- Murein is indicated for the treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms, including infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci.
Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of enteritis
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of cell wall formation in bacteria
- Bactericidal effect against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
Dosage
- Adult oral dose: 250 mg four times daily
- Severe infections may require doubled dosage
- Children dosage: 1/2 of adult dose for 2-10 years, 1/4 for under 2 years
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may increase Murein levels in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever
- Other reported side effects: interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
