Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Vermicidal activity
  • Ovicidal activity
  • Larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
  • Loss of cytoplasmic microtubules

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Blocking glucose uptake in helminths
  • Depletion of energy level in helminths
  • Binding and inhibition of parasite tubulin polymerization
  • Extensive first-pass metabolism
  • Plasma half-life of about 8.5 hrs
  • Excretion in urine

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg single dose for adults & children over 2 years
  • 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • 400 mg twice daily for hydatid disease in patients over 60 kg
  • 15 mg/kg body weight daily for hydatid disease in patients under 60 kg
  • 400 mg once daily for giardiasis for five days
  • Recommendations for strongyloidiasis and taeniasis

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Possible dose reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or in women thought to be pregnant
  • No evidence for altering dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
