Description
- SGLT-2 inhibitor

Dosage and administration
- Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily
- Increase to 25 mg once daily in patients tolerating Empagliflozin

Interaction
- Co-administration with diuretics results in increased urine volume
- Co-administration with insulin or insulin secretagogues increases the risk for hypoglycemia
- SGLT2 inhibitors increase urinary glucose excretion leading to positive urine glucose tests
- Interference with 1,5-AG assay for glycemic control
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with serious hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or its ingredients
- Contraindicated in severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis
Side effects
- Most common: urinary tract infections, female genital mycotic infections
- Others: dehydration, hypotension, weakness, dizziness, increased thirstiness
Pregnancy and lactation
- No adequate and controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Not recommended when breastfeeding
Precautions and warnings
- Assessment of renal function recommended before initiation and periodically thereafter
- Not initiated in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
- No dose adjustment needed in patients with eGFR greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
Overdose effects
- Supportive measures needed in case of overdose
- Removal of Emparol by hemodialysis not studied
