Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual adult dose of 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose of 4 gm/day for certain infections
- Usual pediatric dose of 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular / intravenous injections
- Administered over 2-4 minutes by intramuscular or intravenous injection
- Test dose for patient tolerance
- Reconstituted solution potency of at least 6 hours at room temperature

- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Avoid in premature neonates and newborns up to 28 days of age
