Medicine Details

Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

Pharmacology

  • Readily absorbed orally
  • Time to peak concentration 2.1 to 3.2 hours
  • High concentration in phagocytes
  • Biliary excretion as major route of elimination

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 500 mg once daily for 3 days
  • Oral dosage for children based on body weight
  • Intravenous dosage for specific infections

Administration

  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Potential interactions with other medications like carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
  • Co-administration with ergot derivatives
  • Patients with hepatic diseases
