Description

Benzimidazole anthelmintic, active against most nematodes and some cestodes. Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity.

Pharmacology

Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal and larvicidal activities by blocking glucose uptake in susceptible helminths, leading to immobilization.

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg (1 tablet or 10 ml suspension) as a single dose for various worm infections in adults & children over 2 years
  • Recommended dose of 200 mg (5 ml suspension) for children of 1-2 years
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • 400 mg twice daily for 28 days for hydatid disease (Echinococcosis)
  • 400 mg once daily for five days in giardiasis

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Reduction of the dose from 400 mg to 200 mg may be indicated in children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Should not be given during pregnancy or women thought to be pregnant
  • No evidence to alter dosage in renal, hepatic or cardiac failure

  • Changes in liver enzymes
  • Rarely reversible alopecia
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia reported
  • Allergic shock if cyst leakage
  • Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease

US FDA Pregnancy category of C, should be avoided unless benefits outweigh risks

Precautions & Warnings

Blood counts and liver function tests before treatment and during each cycle; exclude pregnancy before starting treatment; use in Echinococcosis only with constant medical supervision
