Description
- Magnason suspension is used in constipation, heart burn, gas and nausea. It is also indicated in acute and long acting constipation due to hyperacidity and peptic ulcer or stomatitis.

Pharmacology
- Mildly acting antacid
- Laxative
- Poorly and slowly absorbed
- Osmotic properties
- Useful for bowel emptying prior to procedures
- Can help eliminate parasites
- Can help eliminate toxic material in poisoning cases
- Converted to Magnesium Chloride in the stomach without forming carbon dioxide
Dosage and administration
- As a laxative for adults: 2-4 tablespoonful with a full glass of water
- As a laxative for children (6-11 years): 1-2 tablespoonful with a full glass of water
- As a laxative for children (2-5 years): 1-3 teaspoonful with a full glass of water
- As an antacid for adults: 1-3 teaspoonful (5 to 15 ml) up to 4 times daily with water
- As an antacid for children (1-3 years): ¼ teaspoonful
- As an antacid for children (3-6 years): ¼-½ teaspoonful
- As an antacid for children (6-12 years): ½-1 teaspoonful
Interaction
- Decreases absorption of other drugs
- Can interact with digoxin
- Can interact with mycophenolate
- Can interact with phosphate supplements
- Can interact with tetracycline antibiotics
- Can interact with certain azole antifungals
- Can interact with quinolone antibiotics
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients where use of laxative is contraindicated
- Long-term treatment contraindicated in patients with renal failure
Side effects
- May cause diarrhea
Precautions and warnings
- Avoid in patients with renal and hepatic failure
- Avoid in patients with heart block and myocardial disease
- Use cautiously in pregnancy
