Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
- Excretion in urine and feces
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day)
- Doses for specific infections and patient age groups
- Duration of therapy: continue for more than 2 days after signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Different dissolution requirements for intramuscular and intravenous injection
- Administration over 2-4 minutes for intramuscular or intravenous injection, or over a period of 30 minutes for tubing infusion
- Patient tolerance test recommended
