Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Renal protection in type-2 diabetic patients with proteinuria
Pharmacology
- First non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Binds to the AT1 receptor in various tissues
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting and maintenance dose of 50mg once daily
- 25mg twice daily if 50mg once daily is inadequate
- Different starting doses based on age groups
Interaction
- Interactions with Rifampicin and fluconazole
- Concomitant use with hydrochlorothiazide and potassium-sparing diuretics
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pregnant women
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, and cough
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- Risk to the fetus if administered during second or third trimesters
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced fetal renal function during pregnancy
- Symptomatic hypotension in intravascularly volume-depleted patients
Use in Special Populations
- No initial dosage adjustment in patients with mild renal impairment
- Lower starting dose for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment
