Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity
- Potent against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
Dosage
- Adult dose: 1 to 2 gm IV or IM once a day
- Usual duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
- Infant and Children dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg IV or IM once a day
- Maximum dose for adults: 4 gm/day
- Maximum dose for children: 2 gm/day
Administration
- Preparation for Intramuscular Injection

- Recommended infusion period of 30 minutes
- Administration over 2-4 minutes

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions: rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions: eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
- Hepatic reactions: elevations of SGOT or SGPT
- CNS reactions: nervousness, confusion, headache
- Rare occurrence of local phlebitis following IV administration

- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Excretion in human milk

- Risk of anaphylactic shock
- Possibility of gallbladder sludge
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
