Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interference with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life
  • Non-metabolized in the body

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Infant and children dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Intramuscular injection preparation with Lidocaine HCI 1%
  • Intravenous injection preparation with Water for injection
  • Injection administered over 2-4 minutes by Intramuscular or Intravenous injection or tubing infusion over 30 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment

  • No reported drug interactions

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal effects: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, glossitis
  • Cutaneous reactions: rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema, erythema multiforme
  • Hematologic reactions: eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, anemia, neutropenia
  • Hepatic reactions: elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
  • CNS reactions: nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances, headache, convulsion, hypertonia, dizziness
  • Rare occurrence of local phlebitis following intravenous administration

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety not established in human pregnancy
  • Caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Risk of anaphylactic shock
  • Possible finding of gallbladder sludge detected by sonograms
  • Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • Avoid use in premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote
  • Symptomatic treatment recommended
