Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interference with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life
- Non-metabolized in the body
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infant and children dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Intramuscular injection preparation with Lidocaine HCI 1%
- Intravenous injection preparation with Water for injection
- Injection administered over 2-4 minutes by Intramuscular or Intravenous injection or tubing infusion over 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, glossitis
- Cutaneous reactions: rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema, erythema multiforme
- Hematologic reactions: eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, anemia, neutropenia
- Hepatic reactions: elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
- CNS reactions: nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances, headache, convulsion, hypertonia, dizziness
- Rare occurrence of local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of anaphylactic shock
- Possible finding of gallbladder sludge detected by sonograms
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Avoid use in premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)

- No specific antidote
- Symptomatic treatment recommended
