Indications
- Bronchial asthma

Pharmacology
- Novel bronchodilator
- Structurally differs from Theophylline
- Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Decreased affinity towards adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg tablet for elderly
- 400 mg tablet for adults
- >12 years: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet
- 6-12 years: 6-9 mg/kg body weight
- Doxophylline SR tablet for required daily dose of 400 mg
- Dosage as prescribed by the physician
Interaction
- Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Exercise caution when administering with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, etc. may reduce hepatic clearance
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- Lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Use during pregnancy should be evaluated carefully on a risk-benefit basis
- Contraindicated during lactation
- No effect on patient's alertness for driving or using machines
Precautions & Warnings
- Factors like age, congestive cardiac decompensation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may reduce hepatic clearance
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, etc.
- Monitoring blood levels recommended if factors influencing clearance present
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Discontinuation of treatment may be required
- No specific antidote
