Indications
- Treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Benign gastric ulcer
- Treatment & prevention of ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Post operative stress ulcer
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Mode of Action
- Competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells
- Inhibits gastric acid secretion
- Does not affect pepsin secretion
- Does not affect serum gastrin
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dosage is 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg as a single daily dose
- Dosage for reflux oesophagitis is 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg at bedtime
- Dosage for Zollinger Ellison syndrome is 150 mg 3 times daily
- Dosage for episodic dyspepsia is 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg at bedtime
- Child dosage is 2-4 mg/kg twice daily
- Dosage for IV injection and IV infusion varies
Interaction
- Delayed absorption and increased peak serum concentration with propantheline bromide
- Minimally inhibits hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- May alter absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- May reduce bioavailability with antacids

- Patients hypersensitive to Ranitidine

- Ranitidine crosses the placenta

- Similar ulcer healing rates in elderly patients
- No significant difference in adverse effects in elderly patients
