Bactericidal Activity
- Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Mode of Action
- Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
Absorption
- About 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Recommended Dosage
- 200-400 mg daily for adults
- 8 mg/kg/day for children
- Not established for children aged less than 6 months
Renal Impairment Dosage
- Adjusted dosage in severe renal impairment
- Careful assessment of renal function
Interaction with Anticoagulant Therapy
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Use may alter normal flora of the colon leading to C. difficile overgrowth
