Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the transpeptidation process
  • Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus
  • Protects Cefuroxime from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes
  • Provides a solution for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by beta-lactam-resistant bacteria

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults: 250-500 mg twice daily for various durations depending on the type of infection
  • Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years): 20-30 mg/kg/day twice daily for different durations based on the condition

Interaction

  • Probenecid may increase the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
  • Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
  • Potential cancellation of postprandial absorption effects

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis
