Pharmacology
- Bactericidal second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the transpeptidation process
- Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus
- Protects Cefuroxime from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes
- Provides a solution for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by beta-lactam-resistant bacteria
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: 250-500 mg twice daily for various durations depending on the type of infection
- Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years): 20-30 mg/kg/day twice daily for different durations based on the condition
Interaction
- Probenecid may increase the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
- Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
- Potential cancellation of postprandial absorption effects
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis

- Caution in patients with a history of colitis
