Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excreted in urine as unchanged drug and biologically active metabolites
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity, type of infection, sensitivity of organisms, and patient characteristics
- Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for various infections and age groups
- Adjustment for impaired renal function
- Duration of treatment based on infection severity and clinical response
Administration
- Instructions for IV infusion administration
- Precautions for using flexible bags and checking solution integrity
- Regulation of administration rate with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with specific antacids and products containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
