Indications

  • Treatment of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency
  • Prophylaxis during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Ferrous Sulphate BP 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron)
  • Folic Acid BP 500 mcg
  • Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc)

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 capsule daily for adults or elderly
  • 2 capsules daily in more severe cases for adults or elderly
  • 1 capsule daily for children aged over 1 year
  • Capsule may be opened and pellets mixed with soft cool food for children

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the components
  • Iron overload

  • Dark stools
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Anorexia
  • Vomiting
  • Discomfort
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Gastrointestinal upset from Zinc
  • Rare reports of allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy if possible
  • Administration of Iron during the first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency
  • Supplementary Zinc and Folic acid justified during the remainder of the pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Care in patients who may develop Iron overloads
  • Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anaemia
  • Interaction with tetracycline
  • Interaction with penicillamine
  • Absorption of Zinc may be reduced in the presence of Iron
  • Absorption of Iron may be impaired by penicillamine and by antacids
  • Separation of administration of each product by several hours to reduce potential interactions
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Iron overdosage is dangerous, particularly in children
  • Immediate attention required for overdose
  • Gastric lavage should be carried out in the early stages
  • Give oral desferrioxamine
  • Symptomatic and supportive measures required
  • Zinc Sulphate in gross over dosage is corrosive
