Description
Mefin tablets are indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and children from 10 years of age and adolescents. It is a biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug that helps in the management of diabetes by lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose.

Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, given with meals
- Maximum daily dose: 2550 mg per day for adults
- Usual starting dose for children: 500 mg twice a day, given with meals
- Metformin extended release tablet: Swallow whole, never crush, cut or chew
Interaction
- Enhanced absorption with Nifedipine
- Potential interaction with cationic drugs
- Certain drugs may lead to loss of glycemic control
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients
- Severe renal failure (GFR < 30 mL/min)
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Acute conditions with potential to alter renal function
Side Effects
- Taste disturbance
- Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Lactic acidosis
- Peripheral neuropathy in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Uncontrolled diabetes during pregnancy associated with increased risk of congenital abnormalities and perinatal mortality
- Metformin excreted into human breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Substantial excretion by the kidney
- Lowered vitamin B12 levels
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia

Overdose Effects
