Indications

  • Peptic ulcer diseases
  • Gastroesophageal reflux diseases
  • Ulcer induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (in combination with antibiotics)
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Pharmacology

  • Proton pump inhibitor
  • Suppression of gastric acid production
  • Binds to H+/K+ATPase enzyme system

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration
  • Benign gastric ulcer 40mg daily for 4 weeks
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux disease 20-40mg daily
  • Duodenal ulcer 40mg daily for 2 weeks
  • Duodenal ulcer with Helicobacter pylori 40mg twice daily with antibiotics
  • Prophylaxis of NSAID-associated gastric or duodenal ulcer 20mg daily
  • IV Injection for various medical conditions

No significant drug interactions observed in clinical studies

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formulation

Side Effects

  • Well tolerated
  • Common: headache, diarrhea
  • Rare: abdominal pain, flatulence, rash, insomnia, hyperglycemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk
  • Decision should be made based on the benefit to the mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Tablet should not be split, chewed or crushed
  • Long-term therapy may lead to malabsorption of Vitamin B12
  • May increase risk of osteoporosis related disorders
