Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Renal protection in type-2 diabetic patients with proteinuria
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Binds to AT1 receptor in various tissues
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting and maintenance dose of 50 mg once daily
- Total daily dose ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg
- Different dosages for patients under 75 years and over 75 years
Interaction
- Reduction of active metabolite levels by rifampicin and fluconazole
- Potentiation of antihypertensive effects when used with hydrochlorothiazide
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pregnant women
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as dizziness and diarrhea
- Common side effects include nasal congestion and cough
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- Excretion in human milk not known
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced fetal renal function in second and third trimesters of pregnancy
- Symptomatic hypotension may occur in intravascularly volume-depleted patients
Use in Special Populations
- No initial dosage adjustment for patients with mild renal impairment
- Lower starting dose recommended for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or on dialysis
