Description
- Broad spectrum antibacterial agent
- Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Effective against organisms resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins and Cephalosporins
- Excellent tissue penetration
- Used in urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, soft tissue, bone, joint, pelvic, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
- Indicated for gonorrhoea treatment
- Pharmacological action: inhibition of DNA gyrase
- Dosage determined by severity of infection, sensitivity of organism, patient age, weight, and renal function
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily, or 750 mg twice daily for Streptococcus pneumonia infection
- Dosage for gonorrhoea: single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Dosage for other infections: 500-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis infections: 750 mg twice daily
- No dosage adjustment needed for elderly, but caution for those with renal impairment
- No recommended use in children and adolescents due to potential risk of arthropathy
- Treatment duration: 5-10 days; continue for three days after symptoms subside
- Special extended-release tablet dosage for acute cystitis
- Interaction caution with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, products containing calcium, iron, zinc, or dairy products
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
- Possible side effects: Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity, increase in liver enzymes, risk of hypoglycemia, mental health adverse effects
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Not recommended for use in pediatric population
- Possible overdose effects: seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
- Therapeutic Class: 4-Quinolone preparations, Anti-diarrhoeal Antimicrobial drugs
