Pharmacology
- Member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drug
- Classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent
- Interacts with DNA and gives bactericidal action
Mode of Action
- 5-nitro group of Metronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically
Dosage and Administration
- Dose varies for trichomoniasis, intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal & asymptomatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, leg ulcers and pressure sores, anaerobic infections, and surgical prophylaxis
Interaction
- Disulfiram may lead to psychotic reactions
- Alcohol consumption during therapy can cause a disulfiram-like reaction
- Interactions with oral anticoagulant therapy, lithium, cyclosporin, phenytoin or phenobarbital, 5-fluorouracil, and busulfan
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives
