Description

• Indicated for allergic reactions to blood or plasma
• Adjunct to epinephrine in anaphylaxis
• For sedation and relief of apprehension
• Active treatment of motion sickness
• Prevention and control of nausea and vomiting
• Adjunct to analgesics for postoperative pain
• Intravenously in special surgical situations
• Blocks mesolimbic dopaminergic receptors
• Exhibits strong α-adrenergic blocking effect
• Competes with histamine for H1-receptor
• Reduces stimuli to the brainstem reticular system
• Clinical effects within 5-20 minutes
• Metabolized in the liver
• Plasma half-life ranges from 9 to 16 hours
• Average adult dose for allergic reactions is 25 mg
• Nighttime sedation achieved by 25-50 mg dose
• Usual adult dose for nausea and vomiting is 12.5-25 mg
• As an adjunct to preoperative or postoperative medication
• May increase sedative action of CNS depressants
• Not recommended to be used with epinephrine
• Contraindicated in comatose states
• Contraindicated in idiosyncrasy or hypersensitivity to phenothiazines
• Not recommended for intra-arterial or subcutaneous route
• Side effects include drowsiness, extrapyramidal reactions, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, leukopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura, dry mouth
• Pregnancy Category C
• Cautious use in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, cardiovascular disease, or impairment of liver function
• Pediatric use not recommended under 2 years of age
• Reduced dosage for geriatric patients
• Overdose may cause CNS and cardiovascular depression, hypotension, respiratory depression, unconsciousness, convulsions, paradoxical reactions
• Store between 15-30°C, protect from light
• Therapeutic Class: Anti-emetic drugs, Miscellaneous sedatives & hypnotics, Sedating Anti-histamine
