Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram negative aerobic bacteria
- Active against gram positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action interferes with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excreted in the urine within 24 hours
Dosage
- Dosage determination based on severity and type of infection
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for lower and upper urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500mg twice daily
- Dosage for gonorrhea: A single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment for elderly
- Dosage for adolescents and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day
- Duration of treatment based on severity of infection
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Checking the bag for leaks
- Avoiding concurrent administration with certain products
- Regulating rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoiding concurrent administration with specific products
- Absorption reduced with milk or dairy products
- Dietary calcium does not significantly affect absorption
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity in reproduction studies
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Avoiding concurrent administration with specific products
- Liberally drinking fluids
Use in Special Populations
- Effective in clinical trials but not a first choice drug in pediatric population
