Indications

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Good stability to bacterial β-lactamase
  • Active against many ampicillin-resistant and amoxycillin-resistant strains

Dosage

  • Dosage for Adolescents and adults (13 years and older)
  • Dosage for Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years)
  • Parenteral Dosage for Adults
  • Dosage for Meningitis
  • Dosage for Bone and joint infections

Administration

  • Use of freshly reconstituted solution recommended
  • Potency maintenance for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5<sup>o</sup> C

  • No potentially hazardous interactions reported

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Adverse effects occurred infrequently
  • Effects reported include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non susceptible organisms e.g. Candida

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category: B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution with patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics & history of colitis
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may be given safely to patients who are hypersensitive to penicillin
  • Cross reactions reported
