Indications

Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C)
Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults
Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adult patients with chronic, non-cancer pain

Pharmacology

Lubiprostone is a locally-acting chloride-channel activator that increases intestinal secretion and motility, aiding the passage of stool and relieving symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic constipation. Lubiprostone activates ClC-2 chloride channels, leading to increased intestinal fluid secretion and motility.

Dosage & Administration

Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation: 8 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and Opioid-induced Constipation: 24 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
Dosage in patients with hepatic impairment: Adjustment not required for moderately impaired hepatic function. Starting dose 8 mcg once daily for severely impaired hepatic function.

Interaction

Possible dose-dependent decrease in efficacy when used with diphenylheptane opioids

Contraindications

Lubiprostone is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction

Precautions & Warnings
