Indications

  • Treatment of airflow obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Maintenance bronchodilator treatment
  • Treatment of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of emphysema

Description

  • Long-acting β2-adrenergic agonist
  • Once-daily maintenance treatment
  • Acts locally in the lung as a bronchodilator
  • Stimulation of intracellular adenyl cyclase
  • Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral inhalation only
  • Recommended dosage: 75 mcg, 150 mcg, 300 mcg capsules
  • Once daily administration
  • Dosage not to exceed one time every 24 hours
  • No dosage adjustment for geriatric patients

  • Interacts with adrenergic drugs
  • Interacts with xanthine derivatives
  • Interacts with steroids
  • Interacts with diuretics
  • Extreme caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • Extreme caution with tricyclic antidepressants
  • Interference with beta-blockers

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with asthma without long-term control medication
  • Not indicated for asthma treatment
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Indacaterol or its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Common: cough, nasopharyngitis, headache, nausea, oropharyngeal pain
  • Less common: hypersensitivity reactions, paradoxical bronchospasm, tachycardia, pruritis, dizziness

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Caution in pregnant women if potential benefit justifies potential risk
  • Caution in nursing women due to potential excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Potential serious breathing problems in people with asthma
  • Not safe or effective for asthma treatment
  • Not approved for asthma treatment

Overdose Effects

  • Signs & symptoms of excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation
  • Including: angina, hypertension or hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, nervousness, headache, tremor, dry mouth, palpitation, muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, malaise, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, insomnia
  • Risk of cardiac arrest and death
