Indications
- Anesthetic agent for brief procedures

Composition
- Thiopental 500 mg injection
- Thiopental 1 gm injection
- Sterile mixture of Thiopental Sodium and anhydrous Sodium Carbonate
- Ampoule of 10 ml Water for Injection
Pharmacology
- Ultrashort-acting depressant of the central nervous system
- Induces hypnosis and anesthesia
- Binds at a distinct GABA receptor site
- Increases duration of time for Cl- ionopore to open
Dosage & Administration
- Administered intravenously
- Premedication with atropine or scopolamine
- Test dose to assess tolerance
- Normal dosage for induction of anesthesia
- Dosage adjusted according to patient's response
- Different dosage for adults, children, and elderly
- Use in convulsive states
Interaction
- Possible increase in difficulty in producing anesthesia with alcohol or CNS depressants
- Additive action with other CNS depressants
- Increased hypotension and excitatory effects with phenothiazine antipsychotics
Contraindications
- Absence of suitable veins for intravenous administration
- Hypersensitivity to barbiturates
- Variegate porphyria or acute intermittent porphyria
- Status asthmaticus
- Severe cardiovascular disease
- Hypotension or shock
- Conditions prolonging or potentiating hypnotic effect

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Not known whether it can cause fetal harm
- Should be given to pregnant woman only if clearly needed
- Readily crosses the placental barrier
- Small amounts may appear in the milk of nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with preexisting hypotension
- Adequate facilities for support of respiration and circulation
- May be habit forming
- Qualified personnel for administration
- Avoid extravasations or intra-arterial injection
Overdose Effects
- Too rapid or repeated administration leading to fall in blood pressure
- Apnoea, laryngospasm, respiratory difficulties
- Discontinue in case of suspected overdosage
