Dosage

  • Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily (adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older)
  • Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age)
  • Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily (pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age)
  • Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily (pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age)

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
  • Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
  • Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis)

Mode of Action

  • Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
  • Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
  • Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
  • Contributes to the signs and symptoms of asthma

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
  • Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
  • Reasonable to employ appropriate clinical monitoring when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

  • Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, skin reactions
  • Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints
  • Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss, suicidal tendencies, tremor

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
  • Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not for use in acute asthma attacks
  • Should be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
  • Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
  • Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
  • Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

Overdose Effects

  • Adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of the product
  • Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
