Dosage
- Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily (adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older)
- Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age)
- Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily (pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age)
- Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily (pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age)
Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis)
Mode of Action
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Contributes to the signs and symptoms of asthma
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Reasonable to employ appropriate clinical monitoring when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, skin reactions
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in acute asthma attacks
- Should be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- Adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of the product
- Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
