Indications

  • Short-term management of post-operative pain
  • Relieves pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Reduces eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Biological activity associated with the S-form

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet: Recommended dose is 10 mg every 4-6 hours for up to 7 days
  • Injection: May be used for management of moderately severe, acute pain
  • IM and IV dosing for different patient age and weight categories
  • Eye Drops: Recommended dosage is 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Other NSAIDs or aspirin increases side effects
  • Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
  • Beta Blockers reduce anti-hypertensive effect
  • ACE Inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
  • Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Not for use in children under 16 years of age
  • Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Exercise caution in patients over 65 years
  • Caution in patients with peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, liver dysfunction
  • Eye Drops: Caution in patients with corneal epithelial breakdown, should not be administered with contact lenses
