Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for Clindamycin Capsule: 150-300 mg every six hours for serious infections
- Dosage for Clindamycin Powder for oral solution: 8-25 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
- Dosage for Clindamycin IV/IM Injection: Adult dosage of 600-4800 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
- Dosage for neonates: 15-20 mg/kg/day in 3-4 equal doses
- Dosage for pediatric patients: 20-40 mg/kg/day in 3-4 equal doses
Interaction
- Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin in vitro
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or any ingredients
Side Effects
- Abdominal pain
- Oesophagitis and oesophagial ulcer
- Nausea
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Pruritus
- Skin rashes
- Urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta
- Appears in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Monitoring of organ system functions desirable for newborns and infants
- No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Expect adverse reactions similar to normal doses
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Cinamycin from serum
- Treat with simple gastric lavage
- No specific antidote known
