Indications
- spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
- flexor spasms and concomitant pain, clonus and muscular rigidity
- skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
- spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
- cerebrovascular accidents or neoplastic or degenerative brain disease
Pharmacology
- inhibits monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes
- stimulates GABA receptors
- inhibits release of glutamate and aspartate
- produces CNS depression
- exerts antinociceptive effect
Dosage & Administration
- adult dosage: 5 mg 3 times daily, max. 100 mg daily
- children dosage: varies with age
- preferably with or after food
- gradually increased
Interaction
- increased sedation with CNS agents, alcohol, or synthetic opiates
- increased fall in blood pressure with antihypertensives
- potentiated effects with tricyclic antidepressants
- reports of mental confusion, hallucinations with levodopa and carbidopa
- increased CNS depressant effects with MAO inhibitors
- caution with magnesium sulfate or other neuromuscular blocking agents

- hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Precautions & Warnings
- lower doses for impaired renal function
- caution in patients with psychotic disorders or confusional states
- monitoring for exacerbations of specific disorders
- appropriate supervision in epilepsy patients
- caution in patients with peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or organ failures
- monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function
- improvement and acute retention of urine in certain patient groups
- lack of significant benefit in stroke patients
Overdose Effects
- gastric lavage in case of severe overdose
