Indications

• Source of amino acids for IV nutrition
• Suitable for patients with basal amino acid requirements
• Suitable for adult and pediatric patients

Composition

• Essential and non-essential amino acids
• Glucose and electrolytes
• Contains all 18 essential and non-essential amino acids
• Specific quantities of each amino acid

Description

• Sterile aqueous solution
• 7% amino acids IV infusion
• 10% glucose with electrolytes
• Necessary as nitrogen sources for parenteral nutrition
• Positive nitrogen balance achievable

Pharmacology

• Promotes protein synthesis and wound healing
• Reduces endogenous protein catabolism
• Constitutes total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
• Can be administered by peripheral vein

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage based on metabolic stress and nutritional state
• Slow infusion rate not exceeding 500 ml in 3 hours
• In infants & children, maximal rate of infusion recommended
• Step-wise increase in the rate of administration during the first week of treatment

Interaction

• Expected not to interact with other medicaments at recommended dosage

Contraindications

• Inborn errors of amino acids metabolism
• Severe liver damage
• Severe uremia without dialysis facilities
• Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma
• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients

Side Effects

• Rare occurrence of nausea
• Vomiting, flushing, and sweating observed at high infusion rates
• Transient increases in liver test
• Hypersensitivity reactions reported
• Thrombophlebitis may occur with peripheral veins
• Incidence of thrombophlebitis may be reduced by simultaneous infusion of 10% fat emulsion

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Successful and safe administration during pregnancy reported
• No animal reproduction studies conducted

Precautions & Warnings

• Hyperphenylalaninemia noted in severely ill, premature infants
• Monitoring of phenylalanine level recommended in such patients
• Caution in patients with diabetes mellitus and severe heart failure
• Exogenous insulin administration may be necessary in hyperglycemic patients
• Do not use if the solution is turbid or contains particles
• Discard any unused portion
