Indications

Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration
- Taken with water after meals
- 500-1000mg per day for adults
- 750mg initially for acute gout
- 500mg initially for dysmenorrhoea in adults

- Naproxen Gel applied 2-6 times a day
Interaction
- ACE inhibitors diminish antihypertensive effect
- Antacids & Sucralfate delay absorption
- Aspirin increases adverse effects
- Diuretics reduce natriuretic effect
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity
- Warfarin increases risk of GI bleeding
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) increase risk of GI bleeding
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Not for perioperative pain in CABG surgery setting
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: Pruritus, purpura
- Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effect on fetus
- Delays parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- Careful balancing of benefits and risks
- Considered by some authorities to be harmless in breast milk
- Some manufacturers recommend avoiding breast feeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: Reports of abnormal renal pathology in animals and humans
- Eliminated primarily by kidneys
- Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- Caution in patients with creatinine clearance of less than 20ml/min
- Hepatic effects: Reports of moderate to severe jaundice
