Indications
- Combined water and sodium depletion
- Maintenance and replacement of fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate in patients unable to take fluids by mouth
Description
- Sterile solution of Dextrose and Sodium Chloride in water for injection
- Each 100 ml contains Dextrose Monohydrate equivalent to Dextrose Anhydrous B.P. 5.0 gm and Sodium Chloride B.P. 0.9 gm
- Represents 5% Dextrose in isotonic Sodium Chloride solution
- Approximate concentration of sodium and chloride ions in Dextrose is 150 mmol/lit
Dosage
Variable depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area of the patients
Administration
- Check infusion set and infusion solution prior to use
- Insert spike of administration set to the Eurocap and fit the connector of the administration set firmly to the needle
- Clean the venipuncture site with an antiseptic solution before inserting the needle
- Start infusion while adjusting drip speed
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to corn or corn products
Side Effects
- Febrile response
- Infection at the site of injection
- Venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of injection
- Extravasation and hypervolemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- FDA pregnancy category C
- Not known whether dextrose 5% in water will harm an unborn baby
- Not known whether dextrose 5% in water passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby
- Consult doctor if pregnant or planning to become pregnant, and if breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Preparation contains Sodium Chloride, caution for patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary edema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia
- Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
- Concurrent use of insulin may be needed for diabetic patients
- Discontinue infusion if rigor arises for any reason during the process
- Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date

Keep below 30°C, away from light & moisture, and out of the reach of children
