Indications

  • Pre- and post-operative cover (e.g., for cataract surgery)
  • Non-infected chronic conjunctivitis
  • Keratoconjunctivitis
  • Non-infected post-traumatic conditions of the cornea and conjunctiva

Pharmacology

Blocks the action of cyclo-oxygenase, involved in the production of prostaglandins causing pain, swelling, and inflammation

Dosage & Administration

  • Pre-operatively: Instill 1 drop in the conjunctival sac up to 5 times over the 3 hours preceding surgery
  • Post-operatively: Instill 1 drop in the conjunctival sac after 15, 30 & 45 minutes following surgery, then 3-5 times daily for as long as required
  • Inflammatory conditions: Instill 1 drop in the conjunctival sac 4-5 times daily depending upon the severity of the diseases

Interaction

No reported drug interaction. At least 5 minutes interval required when using another ophthalmic solution (e.g., steroid)

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the components. Contraindicated in patients with asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis following application of cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors

Side Effects

  • Mild to moderate burning sensation in 5-15% patients, transient in nature
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Bad taste
  • Feeling of pressure
  • Allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety not established. Use not recommended unless the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the possible risk to the child

Precautions & Warnings

  • May mask the signs of infection
  • Physicians should be alert to the development of infections
  • Periodic examinations of the eye recommended during prolonged use
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure recommended during prolonged use
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment
