Indications
- Temporarily numbs the front surface of the eye
- Allows for eye pressure measurement
- Facilitates removal of foreign body
Pharmacology
- Local anaesthetic
- Binds to sodium channels
- Reversibly stabilizes neuronal membrane
- Decreases membrane permeability to sodium ions
- Inhibits depolarization of neuronal membrane
- Blocks initiation and conduction of nerve impulses
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4% solution for ophthalmic procedures
- Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac for tonometry
- Compress lacrimal sac to reduce systemic absorption
- Anaesthesia for contact lens fitting
- Anaesthesia for foreign body removal from corneal epithelium
- Anaesthesia for incision of meibomian cyst through conjunctiva
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Transient stinging and blurring of vision
- Excitation of CNS
- Muscle twitching and tremors
- Convulsions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Potential benefit justifies potential risk to the foetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Compress lacrimal sac to reduce systemic absorption
- Avoid use in heart block, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, myasthenia gravis
- Avoid application to inflamed, infected tissues or damaged mucosa
- Protect anaesthetised eye from dust and bacterial contamination
- Prolonged application may damage cornea
- Do not drive until normal vision restored
