Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis

- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
- Anti-allergic properties
- Antihistamine properties
- Anti-anaphylactic properties
- Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Effectiveness in preventing asthmatic attacks
- As effective as selective mast cell stabilizer administered by inhalation
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 mg twice daily with food (can be increased to 2 mg in severe cases)
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food
- Elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
- Reversible fall in platelet count observed with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents during reversible fall in platelet count
- No recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding
Side Effects
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Slight dizziness
- May disappear after initial days of treatment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Continuation of previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Masfen
- Possibility of exacerbation of asthma if previous treatment is not continued
- Special consideration for systemic corticosteroids and ACTH
- Impaired reactions during first day of treatment
- Avoid alcoholic drinks
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
