Indications
- Hypertension
- Renal Protection in Type-2 Diabetic Patients with Proteinuria
Mode of Action
- Non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Biological actions include vasoconstriction and the release of aldosterone
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting and maintenance dose is 50 mg once daily
- Dose ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg
- Different dosage recommendations for patients of different age groups

Interaction
- Rifampicin and fluconazole reduce levels of active metabolite
- Concomitant use of hydrochlorothiazide may lead to potentiation of the antihypertensive effects
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pregnant women
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
Side Effects
- Mild and transient in nature
- Most common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, nasal congestion, cough, upper respiratory infection
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- Risk to the fetus increases if administered during the second or third trimesters
- Potential excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death
- Symptomatic hypotension may occur in intravascularly volume-depleted patients
- Significantly increased plasma concentration in cirrhotic patients
