Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Novel bronchodilator
- Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
- Decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg tablet for elderly
- 400 mg tablet for adults
- 10 ml syrup for >12 years of age
- 6-9 mg/kg body weight for 6-12 years of age
- 400 mg of Doxophylline SR tablet for required daily dose
- Prescribed by physician
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of beverages and food containing caffeine
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol may impact hepatic clearance
- Phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, cigarette smoking may increase clearance
- Possible increase in dosage in certain cases

- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension

Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced hepatic clearance in various conditions
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
- Monitoring of blood levels recommended in certain cases
- Slower clearance in congestive heart failure patients
- No risk of addiction or dependence
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
