Indications
- Improving glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
Recommended dose of 10 mg once daily, increased to 25 mg once daily in patients tolerating it
Interactions
- Diuretics resulting in increased urine volume
- Risk of hypoglycemia when co-administered with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- Increased urinary glucose excretion leading to positive urine glucose tests
- Interference with 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) assay
Contraindications
History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or its ingredients, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis

Pregnancy & Lactation

Assessment of renal function prior to initiation, not initiated in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
Overdose Effects
Usual supportive measures recommended, hemodialysis not studied for removal
