Description
- Antif is indicated in the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The medication is available in the form of capsules and suspension for oral administration, and injection for intramuscular and intravenous use. It should be stored in a dry place away from light and heat, and kept out of the reach of children.
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections.
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections.
Indications
- Treatment of ear, nose, and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease
- Dental abscess
- H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Acts through the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water, and then taken immediately.
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Antif and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Antif
- May affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Penicillin hypersensitivity
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, occasional rash
- Rare reports of Pseudo-membranous colitis

- Category B drug according to US FDA
- Excreted in human milk, caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy
- Appropriate therapy should be instituted if superinfections occur
