Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- 3rd generation broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm intravenously or intramuscularly once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and Children dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenously or intramuscularly once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/ intravenous injections
- Administered over 2-4 minutes intramuscularly or intravenously
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Room temperature stability of 6 hours or 24 hours at 5°C

- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions like eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
- Hepatic reactions such as elevations of SGOT or SGPT
- CNS reactions like nervousness, confusion
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of anaphylactic shock
- Monitor blood picture during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for premature and newborn neonates
