Vesotan 16 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Hypertension
• Heart failure with impaired left ventricular systolic function

Pharmacology

• Candesartan Cilexetil as an ester prodrug
• Hydrolysis in the body to the active form Candesartan
• Angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist
• Blocks vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose for hypertension: 8 mg once daily
• Usual maintenance dose for hypertension: 8 mg once daily
• Initial dose for heart failure: 4 mg once daily
• Target dose for heart failure: 32 mg once daily

Interaction

• No significant drug interactions reported in studies
• No effects on cytochrome P-450 system

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
• Pregnancy
• Breast-feeding
• Cholestasis

Side Effects

• Symptomatic hypotension including dizziness
• Hyperkalemia occurs occasionally
• Angioedema reported with some angiotension II receptor antagonist
• Vertigo
• Headache
• Rarely hepatitis, blood disorders, hyponatraemia, back pain, arthralgia, myalgia, rash, urticaria, pruritus

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Discontinue when pregnancy is detected
• Can be used in lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in renal artery stenosis
• Use with caution in aortic or mitral valve stenosis
• Use with caution in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• Monitoring of plasma-potassium concentration advised
• Lower initial doses may be appropriate in the elderly and in patients with renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

• Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
